The Origins of the Chinese Calendar

The Chinese calendar originated in the 14th century B.C. In 2637 B.C., the Emperor Huangdi, also called the Jade Emperor, invented the Chinese lunar calendar.

The Modern Chinese Calendar

Wikipedia states that modern day China uses the yearly Gregorian calendar instead of the traditional Chinese calendar. However, holidays such as the Chinese New Year, are listed. Most importantly, it provides the dates of all traditional Chinese celebrations and helps people to choose lucky days for important events such as weddings, funerals, moving, or starting a business.

Specifically, days begin and end at midnight. Moreover, the months begin on the day of the new moon. Finally, all years begin on the second (or third) new moon after the winter solstice on December 21st. This is why the Chinese New Year varies from the Western New Year of January 1st.

Ancient Myth Tells Why Certain Animals Appear in the Chinese Zodiac

Invitation to a Grand Race

On his birthday, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way of measuring time. He invited all the animals to be part of a grand swimming race across the river. The prize was a place in the Chinese zodiac for eternity. However, only 12 animals responded. The 12 animals that came for the race were a rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

At the set time, all the animals jumped into the river. As it turned out, the Rat was the first to arrive on the other side. Each successive animal’s arrival determined its place in the Chinese zodiac in the order that it arrived.

Of course, origin myths vary.  Some sources claim that instead of the Jade Emperor, it was the Buddha who initiated this venerated calendar system.
