Identify and Sever Any Attached Cord
First, identify what type of cord you wish to cut. For some, this takes some serious reflection. For example, do you want to cut a cord to a bad memory that has been with you for a long time? Is there a person constantly in your thoughts that you feel did you immense harm? Or are you constantly thinking about a past relationship that you want back in your life? But that person isn’t interested. Or perhaps you carry such hatred for someone you can’t stop thinking about it. Before you know it, you’ve wasted years of your life obsessing over it. If so, perhaps you’ll want to cut the toxic cord with this person.
Groups, Memories, and Nightmares
Maybe there was a group that you belonged to or a job that caused a painful experience that you want to let go of the memory or ties to these situations. Lastly, are nightmares regarding a person, place or thing haunting you? After careful reflection, write down what you wish to cut a cord from. This is called , setting your intent.

- Find a space where you can sit comfortably for at least 15 minutes without being disturbed. To strengthen your intent, light some incense, or a smudging stick of *white sage to clear the space of residual negative energy. Lighting a color candle for the situation you wish to release is also suggested. You can choose the appropriate candle color here.

To Begin the Exercise
- It’s essential to relax your mind and body. To do so, close your eyes and begin focusing on your breathing. Slowly breathe in through your nose with the mouth closed then out through your mouth several times until you feel all tension in your body gone.
- Once you feel completely relaxed, envision an etheric white cord extending from your root chakra (or tailbone), to deep inside the earth. This process is called grounding, which will better focus you and provide protection from intruding negative energy.
- Next, envision the person, place, or thing that you wish to cut cords with. Then visualize the appropriate cords in your mind. This is your natural clairvoyance, connecting you to this person, place, or thing. The cords may appear in your mind as thick black or brownish in color. Some individuals envision harmful cords as misshapen and frayed.
- Special note: While clairvoyantly viewing your cords, you may see healthy energy cords that typically manifest visually as gold, silver, or white. Ignore these cords for now. Negative cords will “feel” negative and often appear as described above.
- Now, tell this person, place, or thing that you love them and wish them well but will no longer be bound to them. You can now cut cords symbolically from your energy body at the origin point with imagined large utility scissors, a ritual sword, or yanking them from you by hand. Additionally, many people use a swift chopping motion with the side of a hand. Either method should work. These actions won’t hurt you in any way.
Here’s the Critical Part
- Whatever option you choose to cut etheric energy cords from your body, perform the action as close to your physical body as you can. This is why I prefer using the “yanking the cord option.” What you’ll want to have happen, is that the cords are yanked from you by their roots. This action ensures that the cord or cords will be permanently gone and won’t reattach.
- Repeat this process until you feel the issue is completely gone. If you don’t sense a release, do the exercise again or try at a later time. Best of all, you can perform this exercise as many times as needed. Also, if you know how to do muscle testing to ask if the cord or cords are actually removed from you I highly recommend this. - Now bring your grounding cord back up into your body, and bring your awareness back to conscious reality. Touch something close by, and drink some water. Finally, to seal your efforts, thank your higher self, spiritual guides, angels, God, etc., and go about your day.
